Another unpopular opinion that has divided the fandom is that Elena was just as selfish when she was human. Some fans have pointed out that she wouldn't pick one of the Salvatore brothers because she selfishly didn't want to lose the other.

She constantly neglected her friendships with Caroline and Bonnie because she was concerned with herself. Even Jenna and Jeremy suffered quite a lot because she continuously put herself in harm's way and refused to turn her back on the brothers.
