While many fans were satisfied with the way Damon's arc ended, there were quite a few who have said they would've changed some things. One things they proposed was that he shouldn't have become a hero but rather retained his status as the show's Big Bad.

A small minority preferred it when Damon was the antagonist. They liked watching his emotional downward spirals and how he wasn't afraid to embrace his darkness. In fact, one Reddit user believed that Damon should have killed Bonnie and become the villain in the eighth season.
