The horror fantasy series is based on the trilogy of horror novels by LJ Smith, who is also the author of The Vampire Diaries books.
The new show will be produced by Greg Berlanti, along with Sarah Schechter and David Madden.
The official description for the series reads: "The Forbidden Game is a teen horror trilogy of novels in which a girl named Jenny and six friends enter a Jumanji-like game that drops them into different shadow worlds to fight off their worst nightmares, or die and have their souls forever imprisoned.
"The stakes are set by Julian, an enigmatic blue-eyed boy who moves freely between worlds. Jenny is determined to save herself and her friends, but when she starts to fall in love with Julian her loyalties are tested beyond anything she has ever experienced."
The Forbidden Game trilogy books are titled The Hunter, The Chase and The Kill, and were released in 1994.
The Vampire Diaries aired on American network CW and aired from 2009 to 2017.
The pilot episode attracted the largest audience for The CW of any series premiere since the network began in 2006, with the first season averaging 3.60 million viewers.
It was the most-watched series on the network before being supplanted by Arrow.
The show has received numerous award nominations, winning 4 People's Choice Award and many Teen Choice Awards.
Greg Berlanti and co will be producing The Forbidden Game
There was once a time where Taylor Swift was considered for a role in The Vampire Diaries, according to former main cast member Nina Dobrev.
Nina starred as Elena the drama, which was fronted by a league of beautiful, blood-sucking vampires and an array of mythical creatures.
Speaking to E!, she explained: "I remember at the very beginning, we heard that Taylor Swift was a fan of the show. And then the producers tried to write a role for her."
"It didn't work out schedule-wise, obviously, she wasn't on the show. But that was a surprising one."
